Notes
The /usr/bin/audioplay program included in Solaris claims to be able to
change volume and balance, but only when used interactively (standard input is a
tty).
If /usr/bin/audioplay is used non-interactively (e.g. connected to a window
manager event) then it expects to read an audio stream from standard input and will also
restore the volume and balance settings when it exits.
However, /usr/bin/audioplay does no seem to be able to change volume and
balance while another program is using the audio device.
